Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and most skin cancer research sadly takes place on mice.
Researchers have successfully treated skin cancer in mice. But since mouse skin is very different to human skin, it’s little surprise that there is no easy treatment yet for human skin cancer. Current treatment usually involves painful surgery on patients’ faces where tumours are likely to occur – imagine living with the scarring and disfigurement this can sadly cause.
In this short video, our researchers at the Animal Replacement Centre explain why animal free research is the best way to tackle diseases such as cancer.
Our expert team are using human skin left over from cosmetic surgery to investigate the disease. This is animal free, human-relevant research at its best – saving animals from suffering and giving real hope of a cure for humans. It really is no pain, all gain!
