- Nominations now being called – deadline 16 June 2023
THE UK’S SCIENCE COMMUNITY is today invited to nominate exceptional scientists for two awards which celebrate pioneering animal-free research.
For the second year running, The Pioneer Award recognises and celebrates the achievements of trailblazing scientists who conduct medical research without using animals.
Created by Animal Free Research UK, the specially commissioned Pioneer Medal will be awarded to the winner for their outstanding contribution in helping to make animal-free the gold standard in UK laboratories. In 2022 this was awarded to Dr Donald E Ingber – the founding director of Harvard University’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering.
This year, nominations also open for the inaugural Early Career Scientist Award, which will shine a light on the next generation of inspiring animal-free researchers.
The winners will be invited to speak at our Science Conference in Cambridge on 4-5 October.
They will be entitled to call themselves ‘Animal Free Research Pioneer 2023’ and ‘Animal Free Research Early Career Scientist 2023’ and will be supported by the charity to promote and showcase their work through a series of talks and other dynamic events to engage and inspire their peers and the public.
Animal Free Research UK CEO, Carla Owen said: “The Pioneer Award is a prestigious annual mark of achievement that elevates the perception of animal-free researchers in the scientific community. I am delighted we are this year recognising Early Careers Scientists for the first time. An increasing number of scientists – both established and aspiring – are choosing to replace animals in their work to unlock the answers to the many questions we still have about human diseases. They are true pioneers and deserve to be recognised.”
Animal Free Research UK Science Director, Dr Jarrod Bailey said: “Trailblazing human-focused researchers at all career stages are helping to make animal-free the gold standard in UK laboratories. We are proud to champion and celebrate these role models through the 2023 Animal Free Research Pioneer Awards. If you know someone who deserves to be recognised, please nominate them today.”
The call for nominations is now open with a closing date of 16 June 2023. Animal Free Research UK’s Scientific Advisory Panel will consider and shortlist nominations, and an Award Panel comprising of the charity’s CEO and Trustees will make the final decisions.
If you know someone who should be recognised for their contribution to animal-free research, find out more and download an application pack.
